Rolling Stock Kits

WHR ‘Carriage 23’ Buffet Car - As Preserved WHHR

Produced in collaboration with Will Curry, this 16mm scale, laser cut kit is one of three now available from Resurgam Rolling Stock,  representing the NWNGR/WHR ‘Ashbury Corridor Carriages’ in various conditions.

Carriage 23, (originally Number 10) was one of a pair of identical vehicles built by Ashbury in 1893 numbered 9 and 10. They sported all wooden frames and bodywork and were supplied with air-brakes. They had doors located at the ends of each side, and had a lateral 2-1 seating arrangement with access via an aisleway; this being where the term ‘Corridor Coaches’ was derived.

Over time both vehicles were significantly altered, not least during the 1920s when their sides were lowered and vacuum brakes were fitted to permit through-running onto the Ffestiniog Railway. ‘Carriage 10’ subsequently re-numbered 23, underwent various internal alterations including a change to longitudinal bench seating and the addition of a central partition. This was later followed by a second partition to provide the serving counter for its time in use as the widely renowned ‘Buffet Car’. Carriage 23 saw significantly less use during its later life than its sibling (Carriage 9 / 25) and was in fair condition when the original WHR closed.

It was eventually sold off for use as a Summer House, and despite some further structural modifications by the new owner, the fabric of the vehicle was remarkably well cared for over many intervening years. Eventually the owning family decided they had no further use of the vehicle and generously donated it to Welsh Highland Light Railway Ltd and it was transferred to Gelert’s Farm in 1987. Whilst other projects took precedent, it took until 2005 to begin restoration in earnest, which included provision of a new Steel Underframe. It finally returned to traffic in 2009 and sees occasional use on WHHR service trains, as well as occasional forays on special trains over F&WHR metals.

This kit specifically represents the preserved ‘Carriage 23 – Buffet Car’ as seen today. It is designed with our proven hidden slot and tab construction technique throughout for easy and accurate assembly and will be available in MDF or Plywood (Plywood interior as standard). It includes individually glazed panels with droplight frames / and or window beading in full relief. Interior panel detail and bench seating is supplied in full. Prototypical profile bogies, complete with steel wheelsets and bronze bearings are supplied as standard.

As per prototype, the carriage body is mounted very close to the bogies, but there is room for the bogies to rotate adequately to allow the carriage to negotiate a 2ft 6in radius on 32mm gauge, albeit cutting a significant chord in the process. However, I am unsure what the constraints would be for 45mm gauge; but it would be very tight. If there is anyone running on 45mm gauge who would be interested in a kit then please contact me and I will look into it.

The kit includes, 3D printed representations of the Door Handles and Grab Handles. As standard the kit also includes ‘SLR Models’ 3D printed ‘Door Buffers’ and ‘Door Lock Covers’, all of which are manufactured here in the UK. Despite their fine appearance these are surprisingly strong components, especially once mounted in position and will easily stand respectful handling.

Whilst this kit is not supplied with couplings, it can be supplied with ends to suit either Accucraft Chopper couplings mounted from behind the drag-beam, or with a plain headstock to suit couplings of your choice. Please specify when ordering.

Whilst the tea-urns, cups, bar-stock and upholstered seating shown in some of the accompanying photographs are not included as a part of the kit, they are shown here to give an idea as to what could be quite easily achieved by the end user.

Boards for the ‘Buffet Car’ designation are provided, but the lettering is NOT. However, they are available separately from Endon Valley Custom Decals
