SAR NG-V5 Brake Composite Kit

The ‘NG V-5’ Brake Vans were Built by South African Railways in 1957 and were initially allocated to the Avontuur and Otavi lines. When the latter line was re-gauged in the early 1960s, its allocation of V-5s were transferred to Natal. As such, these vans could be found just about anywhere on the SAR 2ft gauge systems and were a common sight on all manner of workings.

Visually interesting, with the asymmetric placement of the guard’s doors, as well as the body being mounted above the chassis on rubber blocks, with a visible gap between the two; these are just some of the details that have been carefully represented on this kit.

As usual, this laser cut kit features our proven hidden slot and tab construction techniques for easy and accurate assembly. It includes, individually glazed panels with droplight frames in full relief, dummy brake gear and a fully fitted interior as standard. As of April 2024 the kit is also supplied with updated representations of the SARCAST bogies, as well as 3D printed Guard’s Periscopes, Side Mounted (Dummy) Lamps and SLR Models 3D printed door buffers and lock covers. The interior of NG-V5s were usually finished in stone grey paint, rather than varnished wood. Therefore, MDF kits will in this instance be supplied with an MDF interior, unless a plywood interior is specifically requested. The application of thin faux leather to cover the seats would lift this even further; although this will not be supplied, leaving it to individual preference.

The bodyshell can be fixed in place on the chassis, or left removable for access. Naturally ideal for those modelling SAR, this van would also look at home with any of the larger generic locomotives in general circulation.

Markings

Most of the vehicles represented in the range were built in significant quantities. As such no lettering or numbering is provided as it would be impractical to include so many numbering options. However, ‘Endon Valley Decals’ produce appropriate decals and these can be customised to suit your requirements.

Detail Upgrade Kit for the original NG-V5 Kit

The following kit of parts is available to order on our usual 28-day lead time and can be easily fitted to the original kit to bring it nearer to the appearance of the updated kit.

-2024 updated SARCAST Bogie Frames (Pair) in Plywood or MDF as well as 8 off 2mm Journal Bearings. Wheels are not supplied; it is envisaged you would use with wheelsets originally supplied.

-3D printed Guard’s Periscope and Side Mounted Lamps

-Section of 1mm Brass Coloured Copper Wire to be cut into sections for door hinge detail.
