Ffestiniog Railway ‘Carriages 22 / 26’ – Modern Condition

Ffestiniog Railway Carriages 22 and 26 are both 3rd Class, 7 compartment bogie carriages. The identity of these vehicles’ dates to the 1890s, when they were built by Ashbury. Carriage 22 was one of the original pair of ‘Ashbury Tourist Carriages’ and 26 one of the NWNGR Summer Carriages. During the 1960s, both received new steel underframes and then in the 1980s both received completely new bodies, with a profile built to more closely resemble the ‘Barns’ and up to the time of writing have remained in regular service. Whilst visually similar, there are a number of differences particularly with the frames, footboards and the internal end bulkhead details.

These two latest 16mm scale laser-cut kits, have been produced in collaboration with William Curry combining his excellent scale drawings, and Resurgam Rolling Stock’s proven design and construction techniques for easy and accurate assembly. Distinct kits for both carriages 22 and 26 are available are available in MDF or Plywood and must be specified at time of ordering. They include individually glazed panels with droplight frames and or window beading in full relief, including the distinctive inset window frames. Full interior panel detail and bench seating is also supplied. 3D printed door handles, grab-rails, and SLR Models 3D Printed Door Buffers are included as standard along with correct profile bogies, complete with steel wheelsets and bronze bearings.

In order to keep the beading as thin as possible, 0.6mm Polybak is used for this application as standard on this kit, whether supplied in MDF or Plywood.

As of April 2025 these kits are available for 32mm using the prototypical pattern bogies, or 45mm gauge using the ’45mm Gauge Optimised Bogies’, with either allowing operation down to a 2ft 6in radius, but cutting a substantial chord in the process. Insulated wheels are also available if required. Please specify when ordering.

Couplings and decals are not supplied with the kit, but the correct decals for the respective liveries are available from Endon Valley Custom Decals.
