Produced in collaboration with Will Curry, this 16mm scale, laser cut kit is one of three now available from Resurgam Rolling Stock, representing the NWNGR/WHR ‘Ashbury Corridor Carriages’ in various conditions.
The Original ‘Carriage 9’ was one of a pair of identical vehicles built by Ashbury in 1893 numbered 9 and 10. They sported all wooden frames and bodywork and were supplied with air-brakes. Doors were located at the ends of each side, and had a lateral 2-1 seating arrangement with access via an aisleway; this being where the term ‘Corridor Coaches’ was derived.
Over time both vehicles were significantly altered, not least during the 1920s when their sides were lowered and vacuum brakes were fitted to permit through-running onto the Ffestiniog Railway. ‘Carriage 10’ was subsequently converted into the ‘Buffet Car’ and survived into preservation, with an intermediate stint as a ‘Summer House’. Alas, the original ‘Carriage 9’ was more heavily used in service and subsequently did not survive the closure of the original WHR.
However, the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway have since constructed a replica of ‘Carriage 9’ in its original full-height condition and this entered service in 2010. This replica is built on a steel underframe and has also been fitted with additional intermediate droplights to aid ventilation. It is a regular component of WHHR Service trains to Pen-Y-Mount as well as occasional forays onto F&WHR metals.
This kit specifically represents the modern replica of ‘Carriage 9’ as can be seen today. It is designed with our proven hidden slot and tab construction technique throughout for easy and accurate assembly and will be available in MDF or Plywood (Plywood interior as standard). It includes individually glazed panels with droplight frames / and or window beading in full relief. Interior panel detail and bench seating is supplied in full. Prototypical profile bogies, complete with steel wheelsets and bronze bearings are supplied as standard.
As per prototype, the carriage body is mounted very close to the bogies, but there is room for the bogies to rotate adequately to allow the carriage to negotiate a 2ft 6in radius on 32mm gauge, albeit cutting a significant chord in the process. However, I am unsure what the constraints would be for 45mm gauge; but it would be very tight. If there is anyone running on 45mm gauge who would be interested in a kit then please contact me and I will look into it.
The kit includes, 3D printed representations of the Door Handles and Grab handles. As standard the kit also includes ‘SLR Models’ 3D printed ‘Door Buffers’ and ‘Door Lock Covers’, all of which are manufactured here in the UK. Despite their fine appearance these are surprisingly strong components, especially once mounted in position and will easily stand respectful handling.
Whilst this kit is not supplied with couplings, it can be supplied with ends to suit either Accucraft Chopper couplings mounted from behind the drag-beam, or with a plain headstock to suit couplings of your choice. Please specify when ordering.
