SAR NG-X Series Tank Wagon

A brand-new addition to the Resurgam Rolling Stock SAR range for 2024, is the SAR NG-X series tank wagon kit. These vehicles were first built on DZ chassis, to act as Water Carriers for the last batch of NG/G16 locomotives, which had a more limited water carrying capacity than their elder classmates. However, the design went on to see use as a more general tank wagon, carrying all manner of bulk liquid products.

This latest, highly detailed kit features a combination of laser cut components, in concert with a significant number of MJF 3D printed components as well as plastic water pipe for the main tank body. It has been specifically designed to be as straightforward as possible to assemble, with the usual hidden slot and tab construction being employed for the chassis, bogies and the top access gantry.

The two ‘one piece’ 3D printed tank ‘saddles’ locate with engraved marks on the top face of the chassis and provide robust support for the tank body. The 3D printed end caps plug into the ends of the tank, and the access ladders locate with slots in the chassis side. The top filler neck and lid, gantry guard rails, bottom discharge valves, vacuum brake cylinder, vacuum reservoir and handbrake wheels are also 3D printed items. Due to the volume of 3D printed parts along with other material costs, this kit is notably more expensive than other vehicles in the SAR range. However, I hope that the quality of the kit and comparative simplicity of assembly bears this out.

Please note that the weld lines represented on the tank were achieved using Model Technics ‘Trimline’ lining tape, applied prior to painting. As the weld lines on these vehicles vary, with some having none visible at all, the lining tape is not provided with the kit. However it is widely available from various retailers in the hobby.

Markings

Most of the vehicles represented in the SAR range were built in significant quantities. As such no lettering or numbering is provided as it would be impractical to include so many numbering options. However, ‘Endon Valley Decals’ produce appropriate decals and these can be customised to suit your requirements.
