Ffestiniog Railway ‘Carriage 21’

Produced in collaboration with Will Curry, this laser cut kit represents the recently completed replica of ‘Carriage 21’. The original vehicle was one of a pair, of ‘tourist carriages’ (21 & 22) built by Ashbury in 1897. However, neither of these vehicles survived in original condition, with ‘Carriage 21’ being scrapped in 1962 and ‘Carriage 22’ being subsequently rebuilt and now bearing little semblance of its original appearance.

The replica ‘Carriage 21’ was built in Boston Lodge between 2013 and 2019, with work predominantly undertaken by volunteers. It was officially accepted into traffic as a part of the heritage fleet in July 2019 and has seen significant use in the Covid-Secure ‘Heritage Services’ of 2020 and 2021.

The kit is designed with our proven hidden slot and tab construction technique throughout for easy and accurate assembly and will be available in MDF or Plywood. It includes individually glazed panels with droplight frames / and or window beading in full relief. Interior panel detail and bench seating is supplied in full. Prototypical profile bogies, complete with steel wheelsets and bronze bearings are supplied as standard.

As per prototype, the floors are raised at both ends, in order to accommodate the bogies mounted below. As of April 2025 these kits are available for 32mm using the prototypical pattern bogies, or 45mm gauge using the ’45mm Gauge Optimised Bogies’, with either allowing operation down to a 2ft 6in radius, but cutting a substantial chord in the process. Insulated wheels are also available if required. Please specify when ordering.

The kit will include, 3D printed representations of the Door Handles and Grab handles. As standard the kit also includes ‘SLR Models’ 3D printed ‘Door Buffers’ and ‘Door Lock Covers’, all of which are manufactured here in the UK. Despite their fine appearance these are surprisingly strong components, especially once mounted in position and will easily stand respectful handling.

Couplings and vacuum pipes are not supplied.

The lettering illustrated here, as well as other prototypically suitable decals are available separately from ‘Endon Valley Custom Transfers’.
