SAR ‘Type 1’ ‘B-Wagon’

It was slightly updated again for April 2025 to include the ‘2025 SARCAST Bogie’ Kit and ‘Solid 3D Printed Vacuum Pipe’. The 2025 upgraded bogies frames and vacuum pipes are also available to purchase. Please enquire directly.

The earliest variant of the ubiquitous ‘B-wagon’, which features a range of detail differences compared to the later ‘Type 2’; in particular the ‘Type 1’ features a much greater degree of riveted construction, with different end and door details. These vehicles were seen in use over many of the SAR 2ft gauge lines, sometimes in block trains of up to 12 vehicles or more; but also mixed in with other workings.

A number of these wagons have found their way into preservation in the UK; in particular on the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railways, where they are in departmental use. A pair were also converted for use as ‘bike wagons’, although they are no longer used as such, with cycles now being accommodated in the brake carriages. Should there be demand, I will produce the ‘bike wagon’ variant; please enquire if interested.

Markings

Most of the vehicles represented in the range were built in significant quantities. As such no lettering or numbering is provided as it would be impractical to include so many numbering options. However, ‘Endon Valley Decals’ produce appropriate decals and these can be customised to suit your requirements.

Detail Upgrade Kit for the original Type 1 B-Wagon Kit

The following kit of parts is available to order on our usual 28-day lead time and can be easily fitted to the original kit to replace the originally supplied items. Regrettably it is not possible to retro-fit the new representation of the pressed steel doors to the original kit.

-2024 updated SARCAST Bogie Frames (Pair) in Plywood or MDF as well as 8 off 2mm Journal Bearings. Wheels are not supplied; it is envisaged you would use with wheelsets originally supplied.
